The Hunter [Limited Edition LP]

$14.95

New Vinyl: $14.95 Buy

Limited vinyl repressing of this album by the New Wave icons led by Debbie Harry. The Hunter is a concept album based on the theme: searching, pursuing, and hunting. Tracks on the album include Jimmy Destri's Motown pastiche "Danceway", while "Dragonfly" has a science-fiction theme to it's lyrics about a race in space. "The Beast" deals with Deborah Harry's experiences of becoming a public figure. "English Boys" is Harry and Chris Stein's melancholy tribute to The Beatles, recorded the year after John Lennon's assassination in New York City, describing the innocence and idealism of the 60's, while "War Child" references military conflicts in Cambodia and the Middle East. The album concludes with a cover version of Smokey Robinson's "The Hunter Gets Captured by the Game", originally recorded by The Marvelettes in 1967. Several tracks on the album were reggae influenced and the band's earlier urgent new wave sound was largely absent.

Townes Van Zandt

Our Mother The Mountain

$14.95

New Vinyl: $14.95 Buy

Our Mother the Mountain is the second album by country singer/songwriter Townes Van Zandt, released in 1969. It is considered to be one of his greatest recordings and features some of his best known works, including "Be Here To Love Me", "Snake Mountain Blues" and "Our Mother The Mountain". The basic tracks for Our Mother the Mountain were recorded in Los Angeles with overdubs recorded in Nashville. The album was produced by Jack Clement and Jim Malloy, who produced Van Zandt's first album For the Sake of The Song, and Kevin Eggers, who ran Poppy Records and also managed Van Zandt. Several big name musicians played on the album, including James Burton (famed for playing behind Ricky Nelson and Elvis Presley) and renowned session player Charlie McCoy. "Tecumseh Valley", which had appeared on the singer's debut album, was rerecorded for Our Mother the Mountain as a result of Van Zandt's dissatisfaction with the garish production employed on For the Sake of the Song. Although the tracks on Our Mother the Mountain were sweetened in Nashville, there was a somewhat simpler, light-handed approach taken production-wise on his follow-up LP.

Townes Van Zandt wrote songs with an uncommon grace and poetic clarity, and he sang them with a voice that was at once straightforward, eloquent, and mindful of the arid beauty of his images. A decade after Van Zandt released his first album, there would be dozens of singer/songwriters following his example, but he was a rather unusual commodity when for the Sake of the Song was released in 1968, and the album's production and arrangements occasionally suggest that Jack Clement and Jim Malloy didn't always know what to make of what he brought them. The 11 songs on Van Zandt's debut are all fine stuff (even the throwaway novelty Talkin' Karate Blues at least brings a chuckle), and the emotional force with which Van Zandt delivers (Quicksilver Daydreams Of) Maria, Tecumseh Valley, and the title tune belies the fact this was his first album. But on several tracks Clement and Malloy attempt to match the elusive mystery of Van Zandt's music with overblown accompaniment and deeply echoey recording, especially the cheesy chorus on the Velvet Voices, the clichéd Western accompaniment of I'll Be Here in the Morning, the tinkling keyboards on Sad Cinderella, and the rattling percussion of Waitin' Around to Die. In spite of the occasionally misguided production, for the Sake of the Song remains a classic debut. These songs make clear that Van Zandt's genius was already fully formed, and as both a composer and a performer he was a man of rare gifts; even when the backing threatens to drown him out, his gifts come shining through, and for the Sake of the Song was an auspicious debut offering from a talent of the first order.

Limited 180gm heavyweight vinyl LP pressing released to coincide with Elton's 50th year in his musical career. Rock of the Westies, released in October 1975, was the tenth official album release for Elton John. As with Elton's previous release, Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy, Rock of the Westies debuted on the US Billboard 200 chart at # 1, the only two albums at that time to have done so. It contains the #1 single "Island Girl." The make-up of John's band was different on Rock of the Westies, being without his long-time drummer Nigel Olsson and bassist Dee Murray, both of whom John fired during April 1975. Added in their place were drummer Roger Pope, an old friend of John's who had played on Empty Sky, Tumbleweed Connection and Madman Across the Water, and American bassist Kenny Passarelli, who had previously played with Stephen Stills and was an original member in Joe Walsh's band Barnstorm. Pope had also played in Kiki Dee's touring band. Grammy, Emmy, and Academy Award nominated James Newton-Howard, at the time a virtual unknown, was also brought in as keyboardist, giving him his first major publicity. Also included was Caleb Quaye, another old friend of John's from his early DJM session days. Like Pope, Quaye had also played on Empty Sky and Tumbleweed Connection and also John's intervening eponymous release. Retained from the previous line-up were Davey Johnstone and Ray Cooper.

Anything Could Happen [Vinyl]

When The Replacements ended their 33-show reunion tour in June 2015, founding bassist Tommy Stinson walked away with his head held high. Armed with a pocketful of new songs and a clean slate, he holed up in his home studio in Hudson, NY and played solo tour dates with a group of A+ players/friends backing him, including Luther Dickinson, Frank Ferrer, Cat Popper, Steve Selvidge, and Joe "The Kid" Sirois. They had more fun than humans should be allowed to have, and over the next year and a half they pieced together a brand new record. A BAND record. Never one to hog the spotlight, the only logical thing to do at this point was to reanimate 'Bash & Pop', the band he started immediately following The Replacements first split in 1991. Fat Possum Records quickly signed the band and will be releasing it's unknowingly-long-awaited sophomore album, Anything Could Happen.

We are very pleased to announce that our first release, Bobby Brown's magical "Prayers Of A One Man Band" will be available December 6th in a limited 1000 vinyl run. Originally self-released by Bobby in 1982, it sees light for the first time in 33 years. Bobby is a multi-instrumentalist, inventor, mystical physicist and world traveler who has charmed everyone from Kenny Loggins to Philip K. Dick. "Prayers Of A One Man Band" places him along side The Beach Boys, Harry Partch, and Lindsay Buckingham as a true California visionary. The album, written and recorded entirely by Bobby on homemade instruments, is unlike any other in regards to scope and originality. It's swirling mix of synthesizers, wood percussion, Hawaiian folklore and new age poetry has captured the imagination of those lucky enough to come across it hiding in record stores and thrift shops. Bobby has remained a true drifter all the while, traveling from Hawaii to China to Russia where he performed in Red Square. This is an unprecedented release and an essential piece of music.

Vinyl LP pressing. Solitude Standing is the critically acclaimed sophomore album from Suzanne Vega. Released in 1987, it was a story of songs in which some of them had been written as far back as 1978. Singles like 'Tom's Diner' and 'Luka' were major hits for the artist and her development as a singer shone through. The album reached #11 on the US Billboard Top 200, with 'Luka' reaching #3 on the Hot 100. "Tom's Diner" was originally an a cappella version on Vega's album, which was then remade in 1990 as a dance track produced by the British dance production team DNA.

Vinyl LP pressing. Chunga's Revenge is the third solo album by Frank Zappa, originally released in 1970. Zappa's first effort of the 1970s marks the first appearance of former Turtles members Flo & Eddie on a Zappa record, and signals the dawn of a controversial epoch in Zappa's history. Chunga's Revenge represents a shift from both the satirical political commentary of his 1960s work with The Mothers of Invention, and the jazz fusion of Hot Rats. The material presented on Chunga's Revenge is eclectic: side one includes a guitar jam ("Transylvania Boogie"), a bluesy amble ("Road Ladies"), a jazz interlude ("Twenty Small Cigars") and an avant garde live improvisation ("The Nancy and Mary Music") drawn from "King Kong" and other songs from a July 1970 Mothers performance. Several poppy numbers ("Tell Me You Love Me", "Would You Go All the Way?", "Rudy Wants to Buy Yez a Drink", "Sharleena") appear on the second side along with the improvisational title track.
